Do this for me today (it’ll make your heart happy)

Two years ago, I shared this story on social media on my birthday. It wasn’t planned - I just felt the pull to put it out into the world. And the response was incredible.

Last year, I shared it again, and it felt even more important.

So now, I’m making it official: I’m now designating every 11th February as ‘National Call Someone Day!’ (You can’t stop me, I already did it. 😝 )

It’s a tiny action that can have a huge impact. And I’d love for you to join me in making this a thing.

Here’s the original post (with some date-related adjustments)…

Want to know the best present I EVER received in my 48 turns round the sun? Then read on...

As many of you know, my lovely (if somewhat smelly) brother, Bez, was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of 2022. And it was a right little bugger, as it turned out - his health deteriorated shockingly fast. We visited him every weekend, but we only saw him for a few minutes a couple of times - most times he was too ill to get out of bed (well, that's what he *said*, anyway...🤨)

But on the morning of 11th February, 2022, the Universe gave him a wee break. My phone rang. And when I picked up, I was greeted by a raucous, giggling, *vaguely* tuneful rendition of 'Happy Birthday To You' from Bez and my beautiful sis-in-law. We had a lovely, funny, mickey-taking chat - I could hear his cheeky dimples were out in full!

And. My. Heart. ❤️❤️❤️

My heart was full to bursting. It was the most joyful, happy, beautiful phone call I've ever had, knowing, that just for a little bit, he had some energy to be HIM.

Bez moved on to his next adventure a few short weeks later. I will treasure that memory for the rest of my life and it brings me nothing but joy to think of it. I remember it like it was yesterday, not 1,096 yesterdays.

🎁 Know what I'd really love for my birthday this year? 🎁

I'd love it if, when you've finished reading this, you would pick up your phone, and call someone.

Don't overthink it. The first person who comes into your head. And say..."Hey! I was thinking of you and thought I'd give you a call..." and enjoy where it goes from there.

Now. If you're anything like me you're thinking...'sure! I'll...you know what, I'll send them a text.'

That is NOT the assignment 🤣🤣🤣

Many of us (myself included) have gotten out of the habit of calling people. We tie ourselves in knots about it. 'Oh, they might be in a meeting/on the school run/driving/combing their llama....I'll just send them a quick text.'

It's. Not. The. Damn. Same.

Call them. If they're busy, they won't pick up, or, if they do pick up because you haven't called them in 6 years and they think you must be surrounded by a pool of lava or else why would you have called, then (once they realise you are, in fact, safe on your sofa), they'll tell you they can't speak right now and they'll call you back later.

Simple.

And if you're wondering, 'but what do I say?'. Here are a few ideas:

  • ‘Hey! Just wanted to tell you I love you.’ (don't do this one if the first person that came to your mind was your plumber.)

  • ‘Hey! How are you?’

  • ‘Hey! Remember that time when we....’

We live and love by connection. The call you make today might change the path of the rest of their day. It might be the exact thing they need today to feel worthwhile, to feel loved, to feel like life is good. It might become a beautiful memory that they draw on when times are tough.

And it might just be the same for you.

With Love,

Mia x
