Is it really possible for you to get more balance in your life?
I was working with a new client last week, and I asked her, on a scale of 1 to 10, how committed she was to getting more balance in her life.
“10!”, she immediately replied with a smile.
But then her face fell.
“Weeeelllllll…maybe a……7.”
I asked her what had caused her to change her mind.
“Well, I want balance at a 10, but…I just don’t think I can get it.”
This is not the first time I’ve heard this sentiment. And I’m sure it won’t be the last. So….what do you think? Do you think you can get more balance?
Have you ever felt like you don’t control your own life?
Women often come to me feeling like life is happening to them. They’re so busy dealing with the things they must and should do, there never seems to be any room for them to grow and flourish.
If this is you, then I have a great exercise for you, which will help you get clarity on what you actually can control, and what you can happily fling into the wind (message me if you want it).
Because – while it’s true that there are things impacting on your life that are out of your control – I guarantee that you have more choices than you think.
What the hell is balance, anyway?
Well, that’s a great question. And the answer is…it’s lots of things!
Your life is balanced right now – most probably not in the way you want it to be! But you are spending your time and energy on a combination of things which are hanging together as a whole – your Whole Life.
Ok, ok – that’s not what you meant by balance, I know. You’re dreaming of a life where you’re thriving in all the different parts of your life, whether that be work, career, growth, family, friends, finances, hobbies, spirituality, health or something else.
And that is entirely possible for you. I know, because I’ve seen it happen with my clients, time and time again.
But it’s important to know that there isn’t just one definition of balance for you. It’s great to have an idea of where you’re headed (more on that below), but your own, unique definition of balance will grow as you grow. Sometimes we need to have a seemingly ‘imbalanced’ life for a while, in order to reach the balance we truly desire – for example, we might study in the evenings and at weekends, to get a qualification which will take us to our dream career and improve our finances.
So the real question is – what is balance for you, right now?
No, Mia – the real question is – can I really get balance? Because I’m still not convinced.
Yes.
Yes, you at the back. Even you.
Because the thing is, getting balance is a skill….well, actually, it’s a bunch of skills – and these are skills that everyone can learn.
Skills like,
improving your mindset. As Henry Ford famously said, “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t…you’re probably right”. I know people go on about mindset a lot and it can sound like a load of old guff, but it’s not, I promise you. If you think there’s no way you can get balance in your life…just how likely is it, do you think, that you will get it? Hmmm?
visualisation, a hugely powerful (and fun!) tool which gives you clarity on where you’re headed (so you can make a roadmap for how to get there).
harnessing the power of habits. Ooh, this is a big one. If you get this, you’ll be unstoppable. Ever enthusiastically started something, just for it to drift off into nothingness a few weeks or months later? Learning how to form sustainable habits is a complete game-changer.
making choices. Making hard choices. Unfortunately, getting balance doesn’t mean getting rid of all the stuff you don’t want to do, and getting to do every single fun thing that has ever crossed your mind (sorry). You’ve got some choices to make and they’re not always going to be easy.
prioritising. Yes, I said it. You know it.
setting boundaries. There’s going to need to be a whole lot more ‘No’ in your life.
But there’s something else you need. Something that will mean the difference between failure, and success; between overwhelm, and balance.
And that is….courageous commitment. Because all of this is for nothing if you are not 100% committed to transforming your life. I know you can do it – but you need to want to do it, and be ready to do it.
So tell me…
On a scale of 1 to 10, how committed are you to getting more balance in your life?
Tell me below. Yes. You at the back.
Do it now. I’ll wait…
